7 ways to get an expensive-looking bedroom

Thursday 21 Jun 2018

There are plenty of simple and easy additions you can make to your bedroom to give it an instant lift, such as adding new bedlinen, popping on a few cosy cushions or sourcing new lamps. However, if you want to take your bedroom to the next level and transform it into an opulent boudoir that emulates the most luxurious of hotels, then it’s going to need some more thought and attention to create a scheme that is lavish and deluxe.

There is no need to completely redecorate, but it may be time to re-evaluate and upgrade some key items doing so will propel your bedroom into the next realm of high-end style.

STEP 1: Pick a statement bedhead

If you do nothing else, invest in a bedhead that brings focus to the bed. It is a relatively inexpensive addition, but the change will be immeasurable – a statement bedhead will give your bedroom a bold confidence associated with expensive hotels or professionally designed spaces.

If you want to make it feel even more luxurious, choose a design in sumptuous fabrics, such as velvet or silk, but be prepared for a bigger outlay.

A classic linen tufted bedhead is so simple to pop into the space, yet it will bring buckets of charm and grace to any bedroom and give it an instant luxe look.

If you are after a guaranteed wow factor, opt for a bold bespoke design with a loud pattern that makes the room feel extra special.

STEP 2: Declutter your bedside

Cluttered bedside tables piled up with old face creams, phone chargers or unread paperbacks can make a bedroom look messy and unloved. If you are serious about creating a luxurious look, it’s time to take control of this dust-collecting eyesore and turn it into a restful, and useful, bedroom addition.

Keep all clutter out of sight in the drawers below, or add a basket underneath for your odds and ends. Then dedicate the top to only beautiful things that add style and charm to your space.

A stunning lamp is a wise investment for your bedside; not only will it smartly frame your bed and bring you a dedicated reading light at night, it will also create a calming ambience in your chic new bedroom that bright overhead ceiling lights can’t achieve.

Elegant pieces of furniture, such as classic bedside tables, deserve to be teamed with beautiful accessories that enhance their shape and style.

You don’t have to fork out for large and expensive bedside tables to make your room look super fancy either. The simplest of designs will do; as long as you stick to a style that complements your bedroom scheme you’ll create a cohesive and impressive look.

STEP 3: Hang dramatic drapes

A window adorned with plush floor-length curtains will give the room a lavish feel. If the rest of the room is neutral then the curtains offer a great opportunity to bring some bold colour into the scheme, while a shimmery fabric, such as silk, will add a touch of glamour.

TIP: You can team curtains with a simple blind if you need extra privacy, but still want a grand look.

You don’t have to choose bold colours to create a luxurious feel; neutral drapes also feel sumptuous and elegant as long as they are thick and flowing.

STEP 4: Top the bed with luscious layers

You can never have too many cushions, and this goes for throws as well. To create a lavish bed that you’ll want to snuggle into, layer it with copious cushions and beautiful throws in huggable textures like faux fur. When it comes to styling your cushions and throws, stick to a neat and orderly hotel approach, rather than the trendy ruffled style.

STEP 5: Add an ottoman for sheer opulence

For those of us lucky enough to have the space for an ottoman or bench at the end of the bed, you’re already a step ahead in achieving a luxe-looking pad. It’s a grand addition that will add grace and elegance, not to mention a handy spot for stashing all those cushions at sleep time. However, if there isn’t the room for such a large bench, look out for a couple of smaller, slimmer stools and place them side by side for a similar effect.

Even the smallest of stools will add an element of sophistication when placed at the foot of the bed.

STEP 6: Keep it matchy-matchy

Glamorous hotels always have matching pairs, whether it’s bedside tables, lamps, cushions or artwork. This interior design technique helps to evoke a sense of balance, which in turn makes the room feel calm and well ordered.

When using a combination of bold colours in your bedroom, a symmetrical scheme will make the look easier to live with.

STEP 7: Go for all-out glitz and glam

You can’t beat touches of gold to hammer home the luxurious look, so introduce glistening accessories around the room to catch the light and add some sparkle.
